Red Circle

Red circles, Route 3, near Cange, Haiti. 2009 (Mitia Elor at home)

Louise Elor works up the hill at the Zanmi Lasante campus. She cooks and cleans, and is one of the longest serving staff at ZL. I met her five-year old daughter, Mitia, while walking along route nacionale 3, just sitting on the porch at home, singing songs and watching the busy traffic go by, waiting for her mom.

These homes are very simple one or two room structures, at best made with cement (breeze) block covered with a muddy stucco, but more often with a combination of 3-5 inch tree posts, matted lathing and daub. And almost always, someone takes time decorating the exterior. Louise’s front entrance was particularly striking and mystifying.

Here are some other homes. All have been marked with encircled digits. I have yet to get a consistent answer as to what exactly the numbers denote.
