Ryszard Kapuscinski, the maverick and highly influential Polish journalist, gave a lecture that could serve as something of a manifesto to many ‘documentarists’. Well, at least on the face of it, his words seem to be addressed to those who work in journalism and the documentary professions. I teach, photograph, and with increasing hesitation, call myself an artist. Kapuscinski lays out, in very readable terms, a proposal that could become a manifesto, not just for documentarists (those who have a vocational interest in the human condition), not just for artists (those who should have a vocational interest in the human condition), but perhaps for the entire educational (especially the liberal arts) endeavor. In these times of hip educational program names, may I suggest, in all seriousness, Studies in Otherness?
