Josef Obensen running an errand with his toy car. Cange, Haiti. 2007.
Josef, running down the main road of Cange. (It has since been paved and he wouldn’t survive – cars and trucks zip along the paved road at more than 40 miles an hour now) He moves among the interstices of child- and adulthood.
The exhibition reception of The Third Heaven was tonight, I gave a talk, there was lots of talk, and a lot of genuine concern – the problem of Haiti matters to us all.
The question, almost the negotiation, of how we have fun, how we enjoy life and value its transience through beauty, while enduring pain, loss and chaos, is perpetual. Toy cars made out of garbage.
