“In science [referring to a psychology experiment] novelty emerges only with difficulty, manifested by resistance, against a background provided by expectation. Initially only the anticipated and usual are experienced even under circumstances where anomaly is later observed.” – Thomas Kuhn in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions
In art, it seems that anomaly is expected, and increasingly considered as was the golden cow. All art/design students and teachers should read Kuhn’s book, and consider the difficult task of approaching and reshaping paradigms.
