Archie Stapleton’s Bowl, very light celadon, Sewanee, 2019.

Sometimes a reverse hibernation takes place. Pellmell, Summer-long daylight hours suck away the darker, quieter joy of just looking, being still, enjoying the things that gather light and treasure it.

Time to return to this, to protecting fragility: that it takes watchfulness and wisdom to bring into existence the better aspects of our humanity; that an oaf can destroy in seconds what has taken generations to assemble.

I love bowls. Among the most precious ones we have around our home are the ones made by my friend, Archie Stapleton. Gatherers of light, calmness, and the elements.
