Chrysotype – the Ware Gold Print

I began to work with the chrysotype process when Mike Ware asked me to test out his formulations. Mike’s experiments were inspired by Sir John Herschel’s unsuccessful attempts at making prints from gold. What resulted, some 150 years later, is a remarkable invention, the details of which Mike has made freely available.

Leanne McPhee, also a fine photographer and printer, published a well-illustrated working manual, part of the Routledge series on Alternative Process Photography, edited by Christina Z. Anderson.

This section of the website will provide summary instructions and guidelines for making Ware Chrysotypes.
